Photo-A-Week #19: A Small Shop in Honduras

October 9, 2012

In a village just oustide the capital, I visited a small shop that makes authentic Honduran food. I walked to the back of the shop and saw two sisters. Though we couldn't talk due to our different languages, the older sister was happy to get her photo taken. The younger sister, however, was very camera-shy. But she was no longer afraid when she sat with her grandpa and big sister. I was attracted by their simplicity and bond with each other.

Photo-A-Week #18: Bread Making in the Orphanage

September 26, 2012

Just returned from my trip to Honduras where I visited the orphanage that Light and Love Home has been sponsoring. Unlike children in other orphanages who have single parents or seek care due to poverty, the children in this orphanage are without both mother and father. They are children with neither parents nor relatives. In a typical year, only those who have grown old enough to leave the orphanage would return to visit the children (however, it is a very rare event). The house parents of the orphanage live in their own home elsewhere visit the children every day. However, it is the older sisters who are the ones that take turns to resolve all matters whether great or small. Taking care of their home with everything arranged in order while looking after their own studies and that of the many younger brothers and sisters is not easy as there are a total of 25 children in the home.

To support themselves financially, they produce baked goods to sell at the local market or to deliver to specific customers. Each time, they have to spend at least 3 hours to complete the task on hand. It is definitely not a hobby to them where they make light refreshments while joking around. When we talked to them, their hands did not stop working. One of our team members tried kneading the bread dough like them. It did not take long until she became tired. Nevertheless, the children in the orphanage work like this at least once a week. This is just one snapshot of their lives. Most precious is that they feel they have a family.

Photo-A-Week #17: Slum Playground

September 14, 2012

It was one of our first time to visit Enkanini, the poorest subdivision of the Khayelitsha informal settlement in Cape Town. When we were walking through the area, we were surprised to discover children playing under a pickup truck cap. It was hot and lacked ventilation. The ground was made up of coarse sand. Nevertheless, to the children, it was their playground. Without any adult supervision, the girl in the picture was afraid when I approached her. She hid herself in the corner.

In this slum, many children severely lacked proper care from their parents and community. However, each one of them desire for the warmth that only a family can provide. Like all children, they enjoy games and playtime. We have so much more than a lot of people. We ought to be more grateful and share more with the less fortunate.
